Calamity Jane- The Lyric, Plymouth Theatre Royal

Lost my heart in the black hills, the black hills of Dakota!

What an absolute triumph this performance was. Despite some technical issues, this performance simply blew me away. Superb voices, songs from the film and songs for the stage, and gentle comical touches which were so reminiscent of Dorris Day. Yet this lead actress Jodie Prenger made it her own. She blasted out 'Secret Love' in a way Ms Day never could have.
I gave this performance a standing ovation, as did several other members of the audience. The use of musical instruments live on stage was extremely effective. It brought the show to life. The costumes were fantastic and I particularly enjoyed the use of height difference between Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok. It was an all-round superb show which I would highly recommend to people of all ages.

My one criticism was that the speed of some of the talking was too fast for the slightly echoey lyric whilst using the microphones. However, I am sure that this wouldn't be so with every theatre and most likely depends on where you happen to be sitting. If you're going to book a ticket- plump for the centre of the circle if at all possible.

I loved the attitude in this performance. Calamity stomped around most inelegantly, and despite being made out to be rather manly, managed to maintain a demure composure which I found very flattering. Katie's voice was sweet as a nut, but my favourite has to be Bill's solo. It was exquistely sweet, expertly sung and painfully precise. I absolutely loved it and want to find a the track to download!

A whip-cracking success!

My secret love's not secret any more...
