Sleeping Beauty: A Gothic Romance- Theatre Royal, The Lyric

I had never been to see a ballet before, and I was expecting a lot of tutu's and tights. Instead, what I got was a dark love story.

The dancing was tremendous, but I had expected nothing less. What really astounded me the ideas of using puppets, dramatic scenery, elaborate costumes, the use of conveyor belts on stage and turning a live dancer into a doll. Faceless and beautiful.

I leant forward in my chair throughout the whole performance. Sleeping Beauty is certainly no longer a children's tale. This telling brought it crashing into the 21st century, and breathed new life into it. Hoodies, twinkling forests and curtain-climbing pulled together in a heady gauze of angst, love and a thirst for life.
