The Prince of the Pagodas- Theatre Royal, The Lyric
Birmingham Royal Ballet collaborating with the set and costume designers from War Horse to create quite a spectacle.
It was clear why the Prima Ballerina was chosen. Her movements were entirely graceful and elegant. The lines of her arms far exceeded the standards of those in the chorus, who were at times out of sync.
The costumes were absolutely spectacular. From body suits to traditional tutu's and papier-mache characters, each was worth close inspection.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the scenery- although the people operating the scenery were somewhat hand-fisted when it came to allowing scenery to drop the last few inches onto the stage, which caused a distinct drop back to earth for those members o the audience who had successfully suspended their disbelief.
The show was vibrant and fast paced throughout the first 3 parts. However, the fourth part seemed to drag rather a lot- which was disappointing. I felt that it made the performance end on a low.
The ballerinas spending greatly extended amounts of time on point was very dramatic and impressive. The male dancers were also powerful yet graceful. I particularly enjoyed the use of fans, and the elements of humour which allowed for slight mockery of themselves. I thought this worked very well and I know that it was enjoyed by both my friend and myself.
What was really stand-out for me was the use of contemporary dance (including breakdancing) and the use of animal-like movement. It really was wonderfully intertwined with the more traditional aspects of the ballet.
I would highly recommend this production. The skills on show are fabulous. Perhaps on a larger stage the final phrase would have had more of an impact. Otherwise, I was glad that I had the opportunity to watch this show, but I am not sure that I would go a second time.
