Happy Days- The Lyric, Theatre Royal

This promised to be an upbeat, high octane performance. I was ready for lots of cheese and a fast-paced storyline.

Unfortunately, there were only three good things about this performance: the leopard dance scene, the skirts and the band. I would like to highlight that the blonde dancer (who was not the lead) was the best dancer in it. She was fantastic, and her costumes were the most eyecatching. She really captured the movement of the era and was incredibly graceful.

I couldn't hear what the chorus were singing. They were slightly out of time with each other the whole way through and, as each of them were wearing a microphone (apparently projection isn't a necessity in acting these days), it was very difficult to understand what their fast-paced lyrics were. The main singers were drowned out by the band, or by the chorus on a regular basis, and failed to articulate. The American accents were dreadful, and the singing in American accents was just awful. I did not enjoy any of the characters. The quality of the acting was poor to say the least; entirely over-acted to the extent that it made High School Musical look like reality TV. The Fonz was nasal and lacked charisma, and the storyline was almost non-existent.

No wonder the theatre was only half-full. A tepid performance. I did not stay for the second half as I was thoroughly disappointed. I heard mutterings to the same tune on my way out.

Huge congratulations to the costume department and to the set-designers. These two things were great. Other than this I certainly would not recommend going to see this. Kids might enjoy it, but for the ladies bums on show; but I will not be recommending this dross.
