Blood Brothers- Theatre Royal, The Lyric

Theatre at its most captivating.

Blood brothers follows the lives of twin boys. One kept, one given away, growing up in different households and different social classes.

This enthralling piece of theatre forces you to question the 'grass is always greener' ideas held in society, and deeply examines the lives of the characters at an unrelenting pace. The drama unfolds steadily, and through the use of song the audience comes to 'tune in' to the foibles of each character.

The music is truly inspired, and I would heartily recommend purchasing the soundtrack. I am a particular fan of the use of storytelling through drawing emphatic parallels between the lives of the Characters and that of Marilyn Monroe.

Of particular note is the ability of each actor to grow with their character, from childhood, through adolescence to adulthood in a seamless parade.

The absolute perfection of the final scene had me in floods of tears, and has the hairs stood up on the back of my neck as I write this. The audience were on their feet before the end of Mrs Johnstone's rendition of 'Tell Me It's Not True' along with the full company.

This show had everything one could desire from a night at the theatre. Humour, humility, drama and extremes of emotion all forming a show whose excellence surely cannot be exceeded.

10/10
