Love and Information- The Drum- Theatre Royal
Having previously been to see a People's Company production, and having not particularly enjoyed the experience, I was slightly retiscent to attend this performance. However, I was happy to give the company another chance, as I felt that the stage production was more of a problem than the acting itself in the previous show.
I was very impressed with this performance. It was intriguing snapshots into various scenes, each a stand-alone microcosm, but each significant to each other in tenuous ways. It was cleverly put together, and there were several members of the cast who really stood out. It was a large cast, and it was brilliant to see talent at the various ages. I enjoyed the humour, and the popular use of turning horizontal images to vertical ones, so that the audience may see what is going on. This was used extensively throughout this production, to great effect.
The production itself was fast-paced and interesting. I was a fan of the use of layered sounds and images, and felt the full effect of them washing over me. It felt frantic, and certainly gave the show an edgy quality.
Particular applause should go to the actress who played the video game, who was superb throughout, and the two ladies who started the show on a food production line. They really took on each of their characters and I felt that there was a depth to them, which was unspoken to the audience but which gave them credibility.
I really enjoyed this performance, and I would certainly recommend it. Unfortunately, the person who accompanied me did not enjoy the 'bittiness' of the performance, and has decided not to attend future productions by this company. I would therefore class this show as a Marmite performance (you either love it or you hate it.)
I look forward to hearing about the next show!
